Losing your hair feels like losing a part of yourself. For many men (and women, too), hair loss can feel like aging fast-forward. It chips away and alters your appearance in ways you didn’t think possible. That’s why more people are turning to hair restoration treatments to reclaim not just their hair, but their self-confidence.
However, before booking a consultation, one of the most common questions that arises is: Are hair transplants permanent?
The short answer is yes, hair transplants can be permanent, especially when performed by experienced professionals using advanced methods, such as the Follicular Unit Implantation (FUI) technique, which is offered at BEIAMED.
A hair transplant is a type of surgery that moves hair you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair. It involves harvesting hair follicles from one part of the body, typically the back or sides of the scalp, and transplanting them to areas of thinning or baldness.
The Follicular Unit Implantation (FUI) is a minimally invasive technique that extracts individual hair follicles and places them with precision to achieve a natural-looking result.
So, Are Hair Transplants Truly Permanent?
The transplanted hair follicles are taken from areas of the scalp that are resistant to DHT, Dihydrotestosterone, the hormone most commonly responsible for hair loss. Because these follicles are not affected by DHT, they are expected to last a lifetime once transplanted.
While the newly implanted hair will initially shed, it will begin to regrow after a few months. With proper aftercare and a healthy lifestyle, the results are long-term and, in most cases, permanent.
How Long Does Transplanted Hair Last?
Initially, you may start to see some hair growth over a few days. Around 4-6 months after the procedure, you will begin to notice the progress of the final result, and in a few months, you will continue to see more natural results. The full natural results can take up to a year to become visible.
Once the transplanted follicles settle and begin growing, they behave like the hair from the donor site. You can wash, cut, and style them as you see fit. Your hair will continue to grow naturally, even as the surrounding native hair may thin over time.
Keep in mind that while the transplanted hair is permanent, ongoing hair loss in untreated areas can continue. This is why a consultation with our BEIAMED specialist is key to creating a personalized, future-proof plan.
How many sessions do I need?
There are situations where a second or even third session may be necessary;
- Some patients have large balding areas that require more grafts than can be harvested in a single session.
- Others may have a donor area that isn’t dense or rich enough to cover all the balding spots effectively.
- Over time, some patients may also experience further loss of their natural hair, which can reduce the overall density around the transplanted zones.
Even so, your first session will still deliver visible, long-lasting results on its own.
